My Connection to the Kijabe Forest

I attended high school in Kenya, nestled on the edge of the Rift Valley in the Kijabe Forest. As a teenager, I cherished hiking through this beautiful forest. During a recent visit to Kenya, I had the opportunity to revisit and hike in the forest, as well as along the rail line that runs just above our school.

During our hike, my husband and I were caught in a torrential downpour, as it was the peak of the rainy season. A large, long culvert under the railroad track became clogged with debris, causing water to build up in the ravine behind the tracks. Normally, this culvert would manage the flow, but the excessive rain, exacerbated by climate change, led to a dangerous buildup of pressure. At 3 am, three days after our hike, the water burst through, washing away a section of the railroad track. Tons of water, mud, trees, and debris cascaded down the escarpment, leaving a path of destruction and tragically causing the loss of 50 lives in the town of Mai Mahiu as they slept.

I am a proud supporter of the Kijabe Forest Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting, conserving, and restoring the Kijabe Forest. This community-based organization collaborates with the Kenya Forest Service and employs local rangers to carry out restoration efforts, including direct seeding, enrichment planting, fire management, and assisted natural regeneration. To support their crucial work, I donate 10% of my sales to the Kijabe Forest Trust.
