Viscosity Colour Etching

To create a traditional viscosity etching, a ground is applied to the surface of the plate and lines are drawn through the resist using a sharp metal needle. The plate is put into an acid bath and the exposed lines are etched into the metal plate.

To create the tonal areas the initial resist is removed and additional resist is applied to allow some areas to remain exposed.

When inking a viscosity etching the printmaking ink is forced into all the lines and the surface wiped clean, then a single pass of large hard rubber roller flooded with coloured ink is applied. A second pass with a large softer rubber roller inked in a different colour with a different viscosity or oiliness is dropped into the open bit areas on the plate, which creates the luminous colour which is characteristic of viscosity colour etchings.
